LASIK Myths

LASIK is extremely effective for those who wish to address refractive errors that impair their vision. This refractive surgery is a great alternative to glasses and contact lenses, which may explain why millions have already undergone LASIK surgery worldwide to restore their vision. Yet even though LASIK is so popular, there are plenty of myths and misconceptions that people have about LASIK and what it can accomplish. The team at our Boston LASIK surgery center would like to take a look at some of these myths about LASIK and give you some proper information about what it can accomplish.

One myth is that LASIK can give you superhuman vision. That’s really not true. For most patients, they achieve good vision in the range of 20/40, with a fair number of patients achieving perfect vision. The main goal of LASIK is to eliminate your dependence on corrective lenses, and very rarely do patients achieve better than 20/20 vision.

Another myth about Boston custom LASIK is that many patients can lose their eyesight completely. This is false. Going blind from LASIK is very rare. When we perform LASIK here at our practice, we will be sure to observe proper surgical protocols to ensure that you are well cared for and complications are minimized.

A LASIK myth that you sometimes hear is that anyone can get LASIK. The fact is, there are many people who are not eligible for LASIK. If you are pregnant, for instance, you are not a good candidate for LASIK. The same goes for young children and people with dry eye syndrome. Some people may not be able to undergo LASIK because of issues with their corneas. We’ll be able to evaluate your candidacy during a consultation.

One last myth we should bring up is that the results of LASIK are permanent for everyone. Sadly, this is not true. Injuries can diminish the vision clarity you’ve achieved through LASIK. More than that, though, the aging process can lead to changes in vision over time, affecting your LASIK results years down the road. This is especially true in very advanced age. You will have reduced need for corrective lenses and less vision impairment due to refractive error after LASIK regardless.

There is more to discuss about LASIK, and to do so, it’s important that you contact our Boston laser vision correction and eye surgery practice for an appointment. We look forward to discussing these matters with you.
