PRK

It is a common misconception that once a patient has been disqualified from undergoing LASIK surgery, they are bound to a life of glasses and contacts. In fact, the PRK procedure performed at New England Eye Center's Boston, Wellesley, and Leominster locations provides those who can't undergo LASIK a chance to permanently and dramatically improve their vision.

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is designed to reduce your dependency on corrective eyewear by changing the shape of the cornea to make your vision more accurate. Because it predates LASIK, PRK is often discounted as the lesser procedure. On the contrary, while PRK may be your only option, it might also be your best option, depending on your lifestyle and ocular condition. We will perform a comprehensive eye exam and have an in-depth conversation regarding your treatment plan during your consultation to ensure that PRK is right for you. Please contact our Boston, Wellesley, or Leominster office to schedule your consultation today.

Understanding the Procedure

PRK involves a simple, straightforward procedure that is done in a matter of minutes. A few anesthetic drops will be used to prevent discomfort during the surgery; in some cases, a mild sedative can also be used. Once you're comfortable, your doctor will position your eye under the excimer laser. This laser is guided by wavefront technology, which gives us a highly detailed map of your eye, allowing us to tailor your treatment specifically to you. The excimer laser will be used to ablate the surface layer of the cornea and sculpt the corneal tissue to correct your vision problem.

After the procedure is complete, a bandage contact lens, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic eye drops will be used to help your eye heal. The lenses should be used for two or three days after the surgery, giving your cornea time to heal, and ensuring that you experience optimal results. Topical medication or other drops may be needed for up to six months following the surgery.
