LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the cornea to improve vision and reduce a patient’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK eye surgery is performed at our Boston, Massachusetts practice to correct a wide range of problems including nearsightedness (myopia) , farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
The Procedure
When performing LASIK eye surgery at our Boston, Massachusetts practice, we first place numbing drops in a patient’s eye and create a thin flap in the cornea. We then lift the flap and use an excimer laser to remove tissue and permanently alter the shape of the cornea. Finally, the flap is laid back in place where it heals almost instantly. After receiving LASIK eye surgery, many patients notice improvements in their vision right away.
Advantages of Undergoing LASIK Surgery
- LASIK is an outpatient procedure that requires less than one minute per eye
- The procedure is virtually painless
- Most patients are very satisfied with the results of this surgery
Possible Risks/Side Effects of LASIK Surgery
- Dry eyes
- Flap complications
- Visual disturbances such as night vision problems, haze, halos, and glare
- Infections following surgery
- Incomplete correction
Other Considerations
- Vision is not always perfect after surgery, though most patients do experience vast improvements in their eyesight after receiving LASIK
- LASIK surgery does not prevent presbyopia (age-related vision deterioration that usually occurs in the forties)
- Since LASIK is relatively new, there is no long-term data about its safety and effectiveness
- You may not be a good candidate for LASIK surgery if you have thin corneas, large pupils, dry eyes, refractive instability, or a history of eye disease
