MALE VOICE: And now Health Watch on Boston's WB56.
FEMALE VOICE: 7, 4, 5, 8.
FEMALE VOICE 2: Great.
FEMALE VOICE 3: Just a week ago, she would have needed glasses to pass that simple eye test. Now, no more glasses, and she's not wearing contacts either. IF you're over 40 and have bad eyesight, Darcy Fisher shows you a simple new procedure you'll want to look at.
DARCY FISHER: Last week, reading a magazine without her reading glasses would have been impossible or Judy Perrant [phonetic], but she said good bye to her glasses. Judy underwent a new procedure called conductive keratoplasty, or CK. CK uses radio frequency energy to reshape the eye surface.
FEMALE VOICE 4: A good candidate would be certainly somebody who's over the age of 40 who's either slightly farsighted or has problems seeing up close.
DARCY FISHER: After numbing the eye, the radio frequency waves are applied using a probe thinner than a human hair on 8 to 16 spots in a the circular pattern on the eye. But unlike laser eye surgery, the cornea is never cut.
FEMALE VOICE 4 : Besides the fact there's no cutting involved, this procedure is fast. CK takes only about three minutes per eye. And as for what it feels like...
JUDY PERRANT: There's a little discomfort when - - keeping your eye open but otherwise, a very painless and even the post procedure period was very, much more comfortable than I anticipated.
DARCY FISHER: FDA approved only recently, side effects with CK are rare but possible.
FEMALE VOICE: You can have some induced astigmatism, which can give you some slight ghosting for a few weeks, and typically, if that astigmatism persists, then several weeks later we'll do a little touch-up spot.
DARCY FISHER: Back today for a one-week check up...
MALE VOICE: 3, 7, 4, 2 5, 8.
DARCY FISHER: Judy's pretty pleased with her results.
JUDY: The day after I was able to see, I could read the balance on my ATM stubs ticket, so it was amazing that it was so quick right after.
DARCY FISHER: For Health Watch, Darcy Fisher, the 10:00 news.
FEMALE VOICE: The eye center at Tufts New England Medical Center is the only place in Boston performing CK right now. It costs about $1,500 per eye and is not covered by any insurance.
