MALE VOICE: Well, tonight's medical marvel report focuses on a new high tech procedure to help aging eyes. FEMALE VOICE: WBZ's Dr. Mallika shows us this cure for farsightedness could mean the end to reading glasses for many of us. DR. MALLIKA MARSHALL: Presbyopia is a common condition that affects most of us. Once we hit our 40s a lot of us start having trouble seeing things close up. ELAINE YOUNG: I noticed I was having trouble reading. DR. MALLIKA MARSHALL: But like many people, Elaine Young didn't like wearing contact lenses or reading glasses so she decided to undergo a new procedure called conductive keratoplasty to correct her vision. FEMALE VOICE: How are you feeling? DR. MALLIKA MARSHALL: Instead of using a laser or scalpel, doctors use radio waves to reshape the corneal tissue. This allows surgeons for the first time to restore patients' new vision without impacting their ability to see far away. DR. HELEN WU: A little part of the cornea steepens secondarily so the eye has better depth of focus so that it can see better at both distance and near. DR. MALLIKA MARSHALL: Elaine says she noticed an improvement the very next day. ELAINE YOUNG: I could actually read the newspaper without glasses, and I was thrilled because before all it was was a, just a blur. It's a miracle. DR. MALLIKA MARSHALL: The procedure costs $1,500 and is generally not covered by insurance, and since the eyes continue to age, patients may require procedures to fine tune their vision further down the road. I'm Dr. Mallika Marshall, WBZ 4 News.
