Margaret was not a candidate for LASIK, so the doctor at New England Eye Center suggested a PRK procedure in Boston, Massachusetts to treat her vision problem as an alternative. As a result, PRK has dramatically improved her life and has made everyday activities much easier. Click

MARGARET IVIN: I had PRK. That’s what the doctors recommended for me because I had a cone in my left eye. And so they were worried that LASIK could trigger something later on in life. So, they figured PRK was the safest, but plus I’m very active; so, they wanted to make sure I healed correctly. I was able to read and everything close up. I can do computer work with no problem, but as soon as I was to say step out on the street corner or get in the car, I couldn’t see anything maybe traffic light distance away. Like anything at that point was just blurry. I couldn’t drive comfortably down a freeway because I’d be so scared that I’d miss an exit. I couldn’t read signs until they were like two seconds away. It’s definitely changed my life. I’ve been able to do a lot more activities, I can leave the house and not worry that I’d forget my glasses, where are they, I can’t drive my car, just all over in every aspect I’ve been able to change and make my life a whole lot easier. I can now go to CVS or a random mall and buy sunglasses and not worry that they’re not prescription and just walk out the door without feeling like I left something behind. Since the surgery, I’ve definitely done a lot more. I’ve done sky diving, trapeze lessons, signed up for scuba, gone camel riding, what else have I done, I’ve done all sorts of stuff. I went fishing, deep sea fishing for the first time which is something that not necessarily that you have to have good eyes for, but it’s definitely more enjoyable when you can see the fish coming and see where your line is way out in the ocean. I can definitely say it sped things up and it makes a huge difference in general because I proctor exams. And before if I forgot my glasses at home the day of an exam, I’d be looking up in the auditorium and just saying oh that peach guy that’s up in the top. Like I couldn’t tell who anyone was. And now I can definitely basically take visual attendance from the beginning row to the top row, see everyone perfectly and I definitely know if someone’s cheating, like I don’t have to guess.
I would do it again. One of the main reasons I even had the procedure at the beginning was the fact that I kept losing my glasses and I was getting fed up. And one of the staff members upstairs definitely had a heart to heart with me and told me don’t be scared, I know you’re scared, nobody can touch your eye, but you could do this, it’ll change your life. And at the time I’m like yeah, yeah, maybe, maybe this is true, maybe this is just something like a sales pitch, but it definitely, definitely has changed my life and everything I do.
