DR. HELEN WU: It’s important to realize that there are multiple ways that practices are structured. They’re all good and they’re all valid, but the patient should be aware of what type of situation they’re getting into in terms of their pre-operative and post-operative management. So, in some practices the surgeon will do the pre-operative and post-operative care and be there at all times if the patient should have any type of needs post-operatively. In some practices, there is co-management within the practice and another co-managing physician will take care of the patients before the surgery and see them afterwards, but the surgeon is available if the need should arise post-operatively. And in other practices the co-management is done on site and the surgeon will fly in from another location and do the surgery and may or may not be available in the post-operative period if the patient should have any type of issue post-operatively. So, I think it’s important for patients to be clear on how their post-operative care and pre-operative care will be structured from the beginning.
