DR. HELEN WU: Typically, a patient should be aware that he or she should be out of their contact lenses for at least several days, even if not several weeks prior to the procedure to minimize the corneal warpage that may occur with contact lenses. It’s also important to clarify whether the patient’s eyes will be dilated on the first examination. It’s very important in that initial examination that the patient establish what type of lifestyle he or she leads, including their occupation and their sports and their hobbies to help the surgeon best choose the most appropriate procedure for him or her. Normally, a patient will undergo a routine ocular examination with a (unintelligible), examination of the front of the eye and sometimes looking in a dilated examination in the back of the eye. And as well we do specialized testing to look at the shape of the cornea, the thickness of the cornea and other tests that are appropriate for the specific refractive surgery procedures that we do. This usually takes about anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour and a half.
