BOSTON, MA (January 2010) – Dr. Eli Peli, OD, MSc, FAAO, New England Eye Center’s Director of the Vision Rehabilitation Service, is the recipient of the 2009 William Feinbloom award from the American Academy of Optometry. The award was presented in November at the organization’s annual meeting in Orlando, FL. Dr. Feinbloom is considered the father of low-vision rehabilitation, though the award is not limited to contributions in vision rehabilitation.

The Feinbloom award is presented each year to honor a person who has made a distinguished and significant contribution to clinical excellence and the direct clinical advancement of visual and optometric service and thus the visual enhancement of the public.
This criteria fits Dr. Peli exactly as he is a leading expert in vision rehabilitation research. He was the first to propose and test the use of computerized enhancement as a visual aid, and has developed numerous visual aids used around the world.
Over the years, Dr. Peli has accumulated a number of research grants, scientific and clinical publications, and awards from a variety of sources.
His main research activities have been related to applying new technologies and procedures to enhance the capabilities of individuals with low vision for tasks involving reading, television viewing, and mobility both on foot and in driving. His contributions in these areas have had a significant positive impact on many low vision patients.
Dr. Peli is available for consultation in vision rehabilitation services at New England Eye Center’s Boston office at Tufts Medical Center. Known among his patients for his caring and personal attention, he combines an active clinical practice with research in low vision technology and aids.

Dr. Peli also holds the positions of Adjunct Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Harvard Medical School. He is also a Moakley Scholar in Aging Eye Research at Schepens Eye Research Institute.
In early January, Dr. Peli also presented the prestigious Helmholtz Lecture at the Helmholtz Institute in Holland.
