Cost of LASIK Surgery May be Tax Deductible

Medical or vision insurance plans rarely cover vision correction procedures. Insurance plans do not see LASIK, PRK, Visian ICL™, Advanced Cataract Lens Technology, and other vision correction procedures as procedures/services that affect the “health” of the eye. These procedures are most often considered optional and cosmetic. If you find your insurance plan “does” offer a benefit for laser vision correction, please bring it to our attention and we will work out the details with you.
*Insurance discounts cannot be combined with any other discount, offer or promotion.
Insurance Reimbursement for Advanced Cataract Procedures
Seniors undergoing crystalens® treatment, ReStor®, Toric lens or other advanced lens treatment for cataracts, can now receive standard cataract surgery reimbursement. The previous Medicare reimbursement policy did not allow patients to opt for this advanced treatment. Click here for more information about this policy change.
Flexible Spending/HSA Accounts – (Use it or lose it!)
Pay for laser vision correction with pre-tax dollars! Many companies offer their employees a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), also called a Medical Spending Account, a Cafeteria Plan, a flex plan, reimbursement account, Flex 125, or Tax Saving Plan. This employer-sponsored benefit allows you to pay for eligible medical expenses on a pre-tax basis. You should take advantage of this benefit, if available to pay for any medical expenses that will not be reimbursed by your health insurance plan.
An expense considered a “deductible medical expense” by the IRS, and is not reimbursed through your health insurance plan, can be reimbursed through FSA. Laser vision correction, glasses, prescription drug co-payments, and most elective surgeries are eligible.
How Much Can I Save?
FSA saves you money by reducing your income tax. The amount is deducted from your income before Federal, State and Social Security taxes are calculated. The maximum amount you can contribute by law is $2,500.
How It Works
First, you will need to check with your benefits manager at work and find out if the plan is offered. Next, find out the maximum amount you can contribute to your plan. Usually, enrollment is in the fall and you will need to determine how much you can expect to spend on eligible benefits. This amount needs to be deducted from your payroll over the benefit year. Most companies allow you to spend the money any time during the year, even before it is fully accumulated in your account. What is not spent is lost, so plan carefully.
What To Do Now
Schedule a complimentary screening to determine your eligibility for laser vision correction. If a candidate, you can plan on how much to put into your FSA. Most insurance companies do not cover elective surgeries like LASIK. However if your insurance or flex-spending plan covers some of your procedure, we will be happy to provide you with an itemized receipt of your surgery.
