January is Glaucoma Awareness Month!

Glaucoma is a very misunderstood disease and if left untreated, can cause blindness. More than four million people in the United States have glaucoma. Nearly half of those with glaucoma are not even aware that they have it. You may think Glaucoma is an “old person’s” disease. If so, you are wrong. Everyone is at risk for glaucoma, from babies to senior citizens. Your risk for glaucoma rises after age 40 and even more quickly after age 70. You are at risk if you have diabetes or if you have a close family member with glaucoma. Are you one of these people? You owe it to yourself to find out by getting a dilated eye exam at New England Eye Center in Boston or any of the satellite offices.
