What is the PanOptix Lens?

When you have cataract surgery, it involves removing your natural lens. This is the only way to get rid of the cataract that has clouded the lens.

In years past, this left the patient without a lens in their eye and they had to wear extremely thick glasses to see. But now, the lens is simply replaced with an artificial one called an intraocular lens, or IOL.

There are several types of IOLs, with newer and better designs available each year. One such type is the PanOptix Trifocal lens. The PanOptix trifocal lens was just released in the US this past September.

The great news? This amazing lens is now offered at New England Eye Center. It comes highly recommended for patients that want to get the most out of their IOL, and for good reason. Keep reading to learn more about the PanOptix trifocal lens and to find out if it may be right for you!

Premium IOLs

The PanOptix Trifocal lens is what’s known as a premium IOL. Premium IOLs are IOLs that cost a little more than a standard IOL option like a monofocal IOL.

With a premium IOL, patients experience clearer vision, especially up close. They can also see at more than one distance. The monofocal lens is also used to create monovision.

Monovision is when one lens is put in one eye to see at a distance, and another lens is then put in the other eye to see up close. The result is adequate middle vision, but most patients need reading glasses to see up close well.

The PanOptix Trifocal isn’t the only type of premium IOL. There are several that use different designs to try and offer the best vision to correct presbyopia. But the trifocal lens offers something other premium lenses can’t.

Multifocal vs. Trifocal

One of the more popular IOLs has been the multifocal lens. This IOL allows the wearer to see more clearly up close than they would with monofocal lenses.

This is because the multifocal lens has alternating rings. These rings stretch out from the center of the lens. Some are set to see up close and others are set to see far away.

Wearing the lens automatically trains your eye to look through the appropriate part of the lens. How and what you see depends on what you’re trying to see.

The trifocal lens is a lot like the multifocal lens because it has many sections of different refractive powers. But unlike the multifocal, the sections are set for up close, distance, and middle vision.

This allows the wearer to see more clearly, not just up close, but also at an intermediate distance.

What are the Advantages of the PanOptix Trifocal Lens?

Because of its design, the PanOptix trifocal lens allows the wearer to see more clearly than other kinds of premium lenses. It also allows the wearer to see more clearly at a middle distance.

This can be a big advantage for those who work on a computer. Before, the standard monofocal lens was the best option for working on screens. The trifocal lens enables clearer vision when working on a computer or other devices with a screen.

The lens is composed of a hydrophobic material that lowers the risk of dry eye after cataract surgery. It filters blue and ultraviolet light to protect your eyes from sunlight and screens.

It also offers high image quality and close-focus vision. If you want to get the most out of your cataract surgery, opting for a PanOptix trifocal lens is a great choice.
